CASTILLO DE MACHARNUDO
Wineries / Jerez de la Frontera
Description
Castillo de Macharnudo, located in the Majuelo vineyard, was once an important strategic enclave during the Middle Ages and nowadays remains an icon in the history of its owners, Bodegas Fundador.
«Viña El Majuelo» has belonged to the Domecq family bodega since 1732 and is believed to have acted as a defensive position on the frontier in the Middle Ages. The present-day «Macharnudo Castle» was later built upon its remains (late nineteenth and early twentieth century).
The building is of L-shaped design with a mediaeval style tower, chapel with cross-rib vaults, bodegas with semi-circular arches resting on a central line of pillars, housing the huge presses where grapes have been crushed since the 1980’s. One wing is reserved as accommodation for the Domecq family.
Except during the grape harvest, the whole wine growing process from grape pressing to bottling currently takes place at the facilities of «Fundador Pedro Domecq».
